20 WOMEN RECEIVES TESDA SCHOLARSHIP IN WELDING

The City Government of Olongapo through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) awarded scholarship grants in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) to 20 Olongapeños as beneficiaries of the Pangulong Gloria Scholarship (PGS) program at the Session Hall of the City Hall Complex recently.

The PGS program provides free training and free competency assessment to support job creation and job preservation. The PGS now comes with a better package as it now provides training support fund or allowance to trainees.

This is the 3rd batch of scholars that TESDA granted scholarship to in Olongapo City since 2007 through the Olongapo Skills Training Center which is one of the priority projects of Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr.

“There is a need to equip Olongapeños for the needed skills that could land them in more rewarding employment here and abroad,” said Gordon.

Twenty women have been chosen for this skills training that will last for about 34 days.

“The government will be spending P10,000.00 for each participant to cover the materials and other expenses included in the training,” said Councilor Edwin Piano.

“Availment of scholarship is on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis that is why we encourage interested Olongapeños to visit the TESDA office,” he also said.

Gordon is also challenging the youths to take the opportunity at hand and consider exploring the latest most sought field as a welder.

“This training could lead to a brighter tomorrow wherein Olongapeños can actually realize their dreams for a better life,” Gordon added.

According to TESDA, the program “is also aimed to assist the poor and deserving Filipinos to enroll in job-directed training programs and earn the corresponding qualification that will enhance their employability without cost to the scholars.”

This batch stands out from the rest as it is the only all-women group.

Twenty(20) women in Olongapo will undergo a 34-day training in SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) with the implementation in the city of the Pangulong Gloria Scholarship by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as part of the comprehensive skills training program of Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. The scholars were given an orientation at the City Council Session Hall on June 2, 2009 by City Councilor Edwin Piano and representatives from TESDA.

BRIGHT FUTURE SEEN IN WELDING

The Olongapo City Skills Training Center is still conducting regular trainings in welding at the 3rd floor of the City Hall Complex to keep up with the demands of the welding skills industry not only in the country but even overseas.

The center has produced 7,910 graduates as of June 2009 with the graduation of its 116th batch of trainees.

Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. is stepping up the free trainings in welding to encourage more Olongapeños to take advantage of the present demand for Filipino welders.

There is a big chance that one could definitely land a job after completing the program. “Kahit elementary graduate ka lang, makakapagtrabaho ka basta matapos mo ang training sa welding,” Gordon said.

Upon completion of the said training which runs for three weeks, covering a week for theoretical discussion and two weeks for actual welding, the trainee can opt to take an assessment examination at the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for certification.

Interested individuals aged 18 years old and above, physically fit and willing to learn may register at the Skills Training Center, 3rd Floor, City Hall Complex or call telephone numbers 224-8390 local 4229 or 4246.
